Artificial Intelligence Standardisation for AI Regulation: A study on the role and limitations of harmonised standards in the context of the European Union legislation on AI.

Abstract
This dissertation investigates the intersection of technical standardization and EU regulation of AI, specifically analyzing the pivotal role of harmonized standards within the AI Act. It explores how these standards function as compliance mechanisms while critically assessing the limitations arising from the normative assumptions embedded in the Act’s requirements. The study highlights the tension between high-level legal mandates and practical technical specifications. Ultimately, it evaluates the challenges of relying on standardization to fulfill the regulatory goals of European AI governance.
